The First Few Weeks of SchoolThe first day of school, everyone was nervous to see our classroom and Ms. Fargo. The day was really exciting and overall fun!!! The first week of school we did not have any homework (well, we had to read for twenty to thirty minutes). We had so much fun doing activities the first week of school. For example, we completed “All About Me” bags. For this activity, we took home a paper bag and put five things that represent us in the bag and brought the bag back to school. We then shared the bags in front of the classroom. We also worked in groups to complete the marshmallow challenge. In this challenge we had a contest to see which group could make the tallest tower out of spaghetti, string, and tape. That’s not all! A marshmallow had to stay on top of the tower. The second week of school was only four days long because it was Labor Day (yay!). Starting the second week of school, we began learning fifth grade math, science, reading, writing and social studies. In social studies, we began by learning all about famous explorers and why they explored. Our teacher Ms. Fargo is such a great teacher and I am pretty sure everyone in the class can agree. We currently have a great dojo score so hopefully we will win class of the month! The Current News!!In math, we are working on Module 1! We have already taken two math quizzes and they went great. We do not have too much math homework because Ms. Fargo gives us time in class to get started, but we do have to watch math videos on the next day’s lesson. Mr. Luu’s math videos are fun and you learn a lot. This helps us prepare and get the most out of the next day’s lesson. In social studies we are learning about explorers, such as Christopher Columbus. In class we are working on an explorer's packet and we are going to have our first social studies test this week. We are all very worried, but excited because it is open packet! Fun, Fun and More Fun!In class we are listening to Ms. Fargo read, “Because of Mr. Terrupt.” This is such a great book and we are so excited to read more. The book is about a group of kids who really do not get along, but somehow they become friends (thanks to Mr. Terrupt). I would tell you more, but I do not want to spoil the book or the ending at all if you are going to read it. In writing, we are working on generating ideas for personal narrative and writing about small moments and people, places, and things that are special to us. P.S. Since we are talking about reading, on October 27 our book reports and character pumpkins are due! Chromebooks and Technology!Everyone in our class loves Ms. Fargo’s class and one of the reasons is because we get to use the chromebooks almost every day! We even took our social studies test on the chromebooks! We go on Google Classroom a lot to complete assignments (which we can even access at home). We use the Chromebooks a lot more in fifth grade than we did in fourth grade. Working on the Chromebooks to complete assignments is so much fun and I cannot wait until middle school when we get our very own Chromebook to take them home with us!!! I can’t wait to go to the TL Makerspace with Ms.Fargo since she has such cool activities planned for us! P.S. Since we are talking about technology, follow Ms. Fargo on twitter because she posts a lot of pictures showing what we are doing and working on in class. @MsFargoTLS Coming Soon!!!There are many things to look forward to this year and coming up soon! We are going to have a Halloween parade in a few weeks! Everyone is going to dress up for the Halloween parade. Who doesn't love Halloween? We also watched Caine’s Arcade and we are going to be working in groups and participating in the Global Cardboard Challenge to create our very own cardboard arcade games. Everyone is so excited!
P.S. Please bring/send cardboard :)

What A Busy Two WeeksThe last two weeks have been very busy. This week it is Parent Conference week, so we get out of school at 11:55am. The teachers have to be able to get ready for the meetings, so we get out early. This is an extremely busy week because we have to read Where the Red Fern Grows, do math and take our Reading test on Friday. Beach Party Dance-a-thonLast Friday was our Dance-a-thon. The theme this year was beach party. Friday was also the hottest day in Camarillo History. Camarillo broke its previous record... It was 108!! At the dance party it felt like we were actually at the beach! After we finished dancing and went outside, everyone got even hotter! We all started grabbing the water. We drank almost all of it before we got back to the classroom. At 2:00pm we went to the MPR and took our class picture. That was so fun. The photographer took about 7 regular pictures and then 3 funny ones. ;) Where is Fall?Last week Camarillo broke an all time record for the hottest day. The old record was 103 degrees and the new record is now 108 degrees. It moved up 5 degrees! Wow! When is fall coming? The leaves are changing, but the climate is not. For the last few weeks it has been up to 97, 98, 99, 100, and 108 degrees. We don’t know when fall weather is coming, but we have heard that there will be Santa Anna winds coming soon and with this heat, this is going to be a nightmare! New Math ModuleThis week we started Module 2. So far it is very easy. We have taken 2 quizzes for lessons 1, 2, 3, and 4. When we finish half of the module it will be pretty easy for most of us. Makerspace TourThis last Thursday, we had principals and teachers come to our school and take a tour of our Makerspace. These principals and teachers were from surrounding school districts (Ventura, Rio, and Port Hueneme). Ms. Fargo lead a lesson on Stop Motion Animation. We have done this before, so we got to teach our Little Buddies how to use the Lego Movie Maker app. A few groups showed the principals and teachers some of our cardboard creations. It looked like they were loving the Makerspace! Our class is thinking that they will want to make a Makerspace at their schools too. We had a fun time and we hope we get to show off this room again soon! Goodbye MaxOne of our classmates, Max, is moving to Orange County today. We will miss him so much because he is a great friend, is nice to everyone around him, and is very funny. He is wearing a white tshirt today and is letting everyone sign it. We hope he makes tons of friends at his new school and we hope he never forgets us. Hopefully we can Skype him sometime to see how he is doing.
Hope to see you soon, Max. Have a great time! Make some new friends like us! ;) What a Busy Week!We recently found out that we are going to be doing a book report. Many students already have their books picked out and are busy reading. In Science, we finished learning about plant structures and functions. We will have a Science test next week. On Monday, we planted our own beans. We are watering and observing them daily. The cotton the beans are placed in is turning brown and the beans are losing their protective coating and are starting to grow. We are also did a celery experiment. In Math, we have been learning how to multiply and divide decimals. For example, 0.084 ÷ 7 = 0.012. We had our End of Module Test yesterday. Ms. Fargo will have them back to us on Monday and we will be starting Module 2. P.E We are very excited to get two days of P.E. with Coach Stewart. We have been playing kickball and 4-way soccer. 4-way soccer was pretty fun, but the way we played it was very simple. We all were on two teams, so we had to score on 2 goals because it was 4-way soccer. Two people were blocking two goals, so it was kind of crazy!!! Little Buddies Our Little Buddies are in Mrs. Adrian’s second grade class. We have met with our Little Buddies twice now. On Wednesday, we met with them and made cards that told them all about us and we learned all about the Little Buddies. The cards had our favorite animals, our favorite color, our favorite sport, our favorite food, and last but not least, we both had to draw self portraits. Mrs. Adrian was sick today (in case you are reading, we hope you feel better) and could not join us in the Makerspace with our Buddies. We helped our Little Buddies make rural, urban, and sub-urban landscapes out of cardboard. MakerSpace So far in the Makerspace we have been building and participating in the Cardboard Challenge. If you don’t know what the cardboard challenge is, click the link below.
Link ---> http://cardboardchallenge.com/event/tls-cardboard-challenge/ For our Cardboard Challenge, we are making arcade games for other people to play.
Getting to WorkWe have worked so hard at getting homework done and tests taken. we are getting better scores and working harder each and every day. we will soon be ready for middle school with help from our great teacher and fantastic principal. although, it’s kind of sad that our school gets a makerspace and really cool desks and chairs with wheels right before we leave for middle school… but better now than never! Curriculum NewsMath and science are still going great. we just took our chapter one science test and did really good. It seems like there were A LOT of a’s. we are hoping ms. fargo has our math mid-module tests graded by monday. we are on chapter nine of where the red fern grows and billy now has his hunting dogs. in fact, they just treed their first racoon. we just took a quiz on chapter 7 & 8… hopefully we did well. P.E. Starts Next Week!4th and 5th grade start P.E. with coach Stewart next week and we are so excited. we will have P.E. on Wednesday and Friday. students, Remember to wear appropriate clothes and shoes, and bring a labeled water bottle. "Room C2 Rocks"The First Two Weeks of schoolThe first two weeks of school were nerve wracking, but also quite exciting. In the first week we didn’t do a ton of workwork, but rather did many fun and collaborative activities like saving Fred and building tall buildings with only one yard of string, one yard of tape, twenty noodles and a marshmallow. Now that we are in the second week of school (and it was a short week because of Labor Day), the real work has begun! Our class is learning fifth grade math, science, writing, and social studies with the help of our great teacher Ms. Fargo. We are very excited about our Dojo points… we have a perfect score (let’s keep it that way)!! Math and Science NewsMath Module 1 is going great. We have taken two quizzes and our class is already feeling so confident. We watch lesson videos from Mr. Steve and Mr. Luu. Mr.Steve is much more stern and Mr. Luu is much more fun... but to tell truth, we think Mr.Steve is way more helpful. In Science we’re learning about cells and what they are made up of. We even made a pamphlet about plant and animal cells. Our first science test is next week! Luckily, we have this weekend to study. Reading, Writing and More FunOur class is enjoying reading Where the Red Fern Grows. So far, it is about a boy named Billy who really wants Coonhounds in order to help hunt near his home in the Ozark Mountains. Billy’s parents can’t afford these hunting hounds, but Billy finds an ad about a dog kennel in Kentucky that sells all kinds of dogs and he sets out to save the money himself. We can’t wait to keep reading and find out what happens next. In writing we began our narrative unit and have been talking about small moments. Technology, Technology and More TechnologyIn Ms. Fargo’s class, we don’t mess around…… with the chromebooks at least! We have been taking a lot of reading quizzes on the chromebooks in Google Classroom this year. This has been so much easier and much more fun. I hope we get to use chromebooks throughout all of our schooling, even college! But who knows… by then, technology will probably be much more advanced. Most of our class loves the Sphero (most of all the new Star Wars one). We can’t wait to take them out for a spin and use them in the classroom and Makerspace. Remembering 9/11Today, we honored and remembered the people who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. For homework last night, we interviewed a family member about what they remembered from that tragic event. A lot of students interviewed their mom or dad and many of them were getting ready for work that day. Ms. Fargo showed us a BrainPop video about 9/11 and how it helped shape our nation. We learned that Ms. Fargo’s dad flew to New York with his firefighter friends to help search for survivors and clean up Ground Zero. They also made a donation to the Fallen Firefighters Fund. At the end of this lesson, we got to take a tour of the 9/11 memorial thanks to Google Maps. We would now like to go there and see this memorial in person. Coming Soon…Coming soon is the Dance-a-thon. The theme is beach party! We are also very excited because Ms. Fargo told us about the exciting field trips we will be going on. This winter we will be going to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library where we will take a tour and get to visit the Discovery Center. We will also be going to the California Science Center and participating in a project on roller coasters this spring. We can’t wait! P.S. Follow us on twitter: @MsFargoTLS & Please send cardboard. ☺ |
